Old Pulteney 21yo was awarded the award for best Single Malt Whisky 2012 by Jim Murray, writer of The Whisky Bible. Huge praise from one of the finest whisky tasters and writers in the world. It’s important to stock up on whatever receives the top award as they become nigh on impossible to find literally hours after the awards are published. My Malt of the Month however is not the 21yo but the Old Pulteney 12yo (£31.99). I just wanted to highlight the award for the 21yo and show that it’s testament to this distiller for producing whisky of such a high standard right across its spectrum of ages. The 12yo has always been a popular whisky, not only because it’s a name that people can really trust and rely on but also for its flavour profile, value for money and funky looking bottle. Located near Wick on the Caithness coast, they use a combination of ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks. I’ll keep on saying it, the combination of using these two woods generally creates a much more complex flavour. They both offer so much to the final blend that it makes for such an enjoyable dram. So much so, that it is now one of the biggest selling malt whiskies at Lockett Bros, out-selling most of the big-name distilleries. We don’t recommend whiskies without good reason, and we love it! It has hints of apple, vanilla, oak, chocolate and Battenberg cake, giving it great complexity of flavour.
