May has to be one of the best months of the year for me. The weather hasn’t exactly been great but hey it can only improve and it hasn’t stopped me drinking Rosè and therefore I’ve chosen one for my weekly column. Another reason for May being one of my choice months is because a lot of the European 2014 Whites and Rosès appear. Chateau Unang Rosè 2014 (£13) from the Western Provence region of Ventoux was one I was particularly looking forward to arriving. The colour of the Rosè wines from this part of France is one of their most redeeming features so when we’d finished lugging the boxes into the shop I was like a kid a Christmas opening one of them up to inspect the colour. It didn’t disappoint, paler and clearer than ever with an incredible blue/salmon pink glow. A blend of three classic Southern Rhone varietals Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, this is by far the best I can remember from Chateau Unang and one of the finest examples of Provencal Rosè, it’s all there for you. Its core-of-a-strawberry colour marries with cherry aromas. The red fruit theme continues with wild strawberries in the mouth and ends with a clean finish. Typically for the wines of Chateau Unang there is a lively start given by its natural acidity – resulting in much appreciated freshness.
