Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 PX: It’s a little bit special

For DoddieAid 2024 teams of cyclists from all over the UK propelled themselves across Europe through the bitter March weather to reach Rome ahead of the Scotland v Italy Six Nations match on 9th March.

Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 PX

As a wine and whisky merchant of good repute – we think we can say that with a straight face – we naturally see huge amounts of different drinks passing through our doors but, every so often, we get our hands on something so splendid, we have to give it some extra special treatment.

Today, we at Lockett Bros have one of those little nuggets and we’re going to talk about it now. What are we banging on about, we hear you say. It’s the unbelievably explosive and magnificent Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 PX.

You know how passionate we are about really good whisky and how we respect the age-old techniques and practices that are woven into the tapestry of our incredible Scotch whisky industry but it’s so exciting when something comes along that laughs in the face of tradition and goes its own way.

This really is a firecracker of a whisky and a huge amount of work has gone into making it what it is, not to mention a 21-year ageing.

What’s the PX all about in the name? Well, it stands for the Pedro Ximenez grape which, some of you may know, is used to make the stunning and ultra-rich Jerez sherry.

This mind-blowing whisky is further matured in the much sought-after (and very valuable) Jerez Butts that for decades have housed the delicious aforementioned sherry.

Before they even get to that final maturing stage, the Bruichladdich Cuvee 407 PX is aged in American oak casks. We told you this was quite a whisky, didn’t we?

When you take all that fancy jiggery pokery away, what you have is an incredibly well-balanced unpeated Islay single malt. Without the impressive lengths that Bruichladdich have gone to, this would still be a helluva whisky, let’s make that clear.

We’ve waxed lyrical enough about the production, so what about the tasting notes? Well, let’s start with the colour – this whisky is a thing of beauty in every sense. It’s a vibrant sunshine hue, warm and inviting.

On the nose, well, it’s really hard to argue with Bruichladdich’s own tasting notes. They highlight its sultanas and dark chocolate qualities. We would add that there’s also a hint of cherry in there too.

We used the word ‘explosive’ earlier when describing this whisky and this is never truer than when examining the palate. There’s so much going on here it’s hard to know where to start.

Those big dark fruit notes really come through on the palate first of all but then, suddenly, there’s a refreshing citrus blast that takes you a little by surprise. Add to that a subtle but definite appearance from coconut, vanilla and toffee and you have a rare tasting experience that you will not forget… and we haven’t mentioned the finish yet!

So what’s that like? Let us catch our breath and we’ll tell you. Quite simply, it’s stunning. This whisky further shows off its complexity as those sherry notes come through. Try it, and be blown away as much as we were!

Guess what? We have it in stock! Buy it here now or visit the Lockett Bros store at 133 High Street, North Berwick.
