A Trip to Monachyle Mhor

For DoddieAid 2024 teams of cyclists from all over the UK propelled themselves across Europe through the bitter March weather to reach Rome ahead of the Scotland v Italy Six Nations match on 9th March.

I’m not a massive fan of corporate type trips but this was one I simply couldn’t turn down. An invite from Liberty wines in conjunction with Champagne Charles Heidsieck and The Monachyle Mhor Hotel to go foraging for wild mushrooms in the Trossachs and the glens around Balquhidder followed by a killer lunch under canvas in front of the beautiful pink hotel.

Oysters and Champagne

We were in the hands of Mr Monachyle, Tom Lewis as we scampered around trying to seek out the illusive Chanterelle mushrooms. What a cracking morning, nothing corporate and boring about this experience. And it just kept getting better. The next stop was a few glasses of Charles Heidsieck Brut Rose Champagne by a fire on the banks of Loch Voil and stone skimming with Graham Bucknall from the Ship Inn in Elie. And then off we went further up the glen and to our lunch at the Monachyle Mhor hotel.

Oysters and Champagne kicked things off and then the rest of the afternoon is all a blissful blurr. I do vaguely recall a bottle of Glengoyne 21yo getting passed around then suddenly I was back in Edinburgh. Perhaps some of the mushrooms harvested that morning had some ‘magic’ qualities to them… A ‘magical’ day thanks to Liberty Wines, Champagne Charles Heidsieck and The Monachyle Mhor.
