Dos and don’ts at your work Christmas party

For DoddieAid 2024 teams of cyclists from all over the UK propelled themselves across Europe through the bitter March weather to reach Rome ahead of the Scotland v Italy Six Nations match on 9th March.

The Office

Are you rejoicing that it’s nearly the end of a long hard-working year?

It also means it’s finally time for that well-deserved Christmas break and what better way to end your working year with a party?

A work party can be very different to a classy night on the town though, be warned.

There are a few universal rules that you may have to take into consideration to ensure you still have your job come Monday morning!

Green tick Do continue with the pretence that you like everyone at work. Sometimes thoughts are best kept inside your head. It’s one night you have to keep up the illusion that everyone in your office is on your good side. Don’t let the old truth serum spoil that.

Red cross Don’t get wasted and tell everyone what you really think, this could end rather badly.

Green tick Do remember to be responsible and have a glass of water every so often between drinks. If it’s a long night out you need to pace yourself, peaking early is never a positive. Plus it decreases the chance of having a massive hangover in the morning.

Red crossDon’t start the Jagerbombs at 4pm…we don’t need to explain this, it’s never a good decision.

Green tick Do talk amongst each other, spreading Christmas cheer. Enjoy taking time out of the work environment to get along with other members of staff and find out more about them but…

Red cross Don’t talk incessantly about work… nobody likes to, let’s be honest.

Green tick Do feel free to dress up nice and festive, a simple little black dress for the women. And for the men, a smart casual outfit is always a hit, maybe even a Christmas jumper if you’re feeling festive!

Red cross But maybe leave those tight, leather-look jeans for another occasion…or never.

Green tick Do spread the Christmas cheer, sing along to Christmas songs, it’s the best way to get into the festive spirit …

Red cross Don’t drunkenly embarrass yourself on karaoke, Britney Spears – Hit Me Baby One More Time, let’s just leave it there shall we! Actually, just go for it. You only live once…

Green tick Do take advantage of the dance floor, it is there for a reason and no party is truly a party without a little dance! Let your hair down a little bit and enjoy yourself, but…

Red cross Don’t dance like nobody’s watching, twerking maybe your hottest dance move in the club but save that ‘party trick’ for another occasion.

Green tick Do turn up on time, this is an office party not a fashion show. Showing up ‘fashionably late’ will not be an option. It also means that you have enough time to talk to everyone and leave early without seeming rude.

Red cross Don’t leave after five minutes of being there and scramble round to the nearest pub. The party will slowly make its way round there anyway and you can’t hide forever!
