The Scottish Open is just days away and the excitement for this event in our backyard is building with every hour, especially now the sun has finally come out to play!
To have an event of this calibre right on our doorstep at Gullane Golf Club is pretty special, and when you see the list of world golf superstars who will take to the field, you realize how important it is to the sport.
The Lockett Bros team cannot wait to see our little part of East Lothian – in North Berwick – buzzing during the event and we’re all set to welcome golf-mad fans from all around the globe.
And let’s be honest, a world-class sporting event needs world-class wines and spirits to really enjoy the festivities and we have plenty on offer.
So who’s coming to the Scottish Open? Well, it’s a real who’s who of world golf’s elite. Let’s take a look at some of the stars in a bit more detail, and we’ve even suggested a suitable tipple for each of them!
Rory McIlroy
Without doubt, this youngster is world golf’s undisputed ultimate superstar right now. At just 26 he has four Major titles in his golf bag and is the current world number one.
He’s also one of only three golfers to have won three majors by the age of 25 (Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus being the other two).
Earlier this year he made the headlines for throwing his club into the water after hitting the ball into the water at Doral. Nothing wrong with a bit of passion, we say.
A drink for Rory? He allegedly drank Jagermeister from the Claret Jug after winning it so we’d suggest something with a kick. Carn Mor Black Gold Highland Park 1989, from the year he was born!
Phil Mickelson
The Californian is a genuine golfing superstar with five Major victories to his name. It seems crazy to think it now, but before his first Major win, ‘will he ever win one?’ was a chorus that grew ever louder.
Big Phil silenced it in 2004 at the Masters.
A drink for Phil? Well, when he won the Open Championship he admitted to supping a 1990 Romanee Conti from the Claret Jug. The price was $40,000. We’d suggest a Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz 2008 would be to his liking. A snip at £65.
Stephen Gallacher
We couldn’t highlight some of the superstars at Gullane without our very own Stephen Gallacher, who hails from West Lothian, not a million miles away from our patch.
Gallacher has four professional titles to his name and was also part of the victorious 2014 Ryder Cup team.
He’s one of several Scots who will take to the course at the Scottish Open and there are big things expected of him from the home crowd.
A drink for Stephen? Well we have to get this fiery Scotsman something suitable so it would have to be a whisky. Our bottling of Fidra Ben Nevis 17 Year Old should do the trick!
The Scottish Open takes place at Gullane Golf Club on July 9 – 12. Pop into our store in North Berwick (just down the road) at 133 High Street.
