Izadi Rioja Blanco

For DoddieAid 2024 teams of cyclists from all over the UK propelled themselves across Europe through the bitter March weather to reach Rome ahead of the Scotland v Italy Six Nations match on 9th March.

The Bodegas Izadi Rioja Blanco is an incredible white wine – The End….. (perhaps a bit brief) It is also a great example of what is perhaps one of the most under-appreciated white grape varieties in the Old World—Viura. The wines that it makes can run the gambit ranging from great sparkling wines, to tank-fermented summer quaffers and some of the most complex and age-worthy white wines in the world. Known as Roussillon in France and Macabeo in other parts of Spain, Viura is by far the most widely planted white varietal in Spain and up until 1975 more White than Red in Rioja was produced. Like I mentioned last week, Izadi have been one of our favourite Rioja producers for many years and they make the finest examples but the Izadi Blanco is a fine representation in its own right showing off a brilliant combination of freshness, complexity, and length. The juice was fermented in 100% new French oak casks, where it stayed for three months with Batonnage (lees stirring) taking place daily for the first few weeks. Aromas of candied lemon, baked apple, bees wax and stone fruits combine in a drinking experience that every white wine drinker must add to their repertoire.
