Epic tour of Australia

For DoddieAid 2024 teams of cyclists from all over the UK propelled themselves across Europe through the bitter March weather to reach Rome ahead of the Scotland v Italy Six Nations match on 9th March.

The plan:
visit as many growers as possible in 2 weeks

There’s never much going on in January so why not head down under and cram in as many visits to growers as possible in 2 weeks. Being a keen cyclist and huge cricket fan it was also quite handy that the Tour Down Under and the Australia v India Test Match happen to be on in and around Adelaide.

Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and
the Adelaide Hills

The trip opened up with a day chasing the bike race around the McLaren Vale and Willunga area. A great day of racing and a thrilling sprint finish which saw Valverde out sprint Simon Gerrans on top of Willunga Hill. The next few days we’re spent cycling around the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hill with visits to John Duval, Yalumba, Henschke and Shaw & Smith

Before leaving South Australia I had to take in a day at the Adelaide Oval to watch Australia crush India on day 3 of the Test Match. Then it was back to airport and a short flight over to Sydney and a few days back in Mudgee with my friend and winemaker Peter Logan. What a fabulous couple of weeks.
